Historically, blue diamonds have been recovered from several localities. Early accounts cite the Kollur mine (and possibly other mines) along the Krishna River valley near Golconda, in the Indian state of Hyderabad (now called Andhra Pradesh; Scalisi and Cook, 1983). This region was described by noted French traveler and gem dealer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1676). Over the course of almost 40 years (1631–1668), Tavernier made six journeys from Europe to India. At that time, India was the source of almost all gem diamonds. During these visits, Tavernier saw many spectacular rough diamonds, a number of which he purchased and brought back to Europe. Tavernier is widely believed to have acquired one of the world’s most famous diamond crystals, the 112.5 ct stone that became known as the Tavernier Blue, in India in 1642 (Tillander, 1975).

Today, there is little production at the Indian mines. The Premier mine in South Africa is now considered the most significant source of blue diamonds entering the market. Discovered in 1903, the Premier mine was initially worked by open-pit methods (figure 3); in 1905, it yielded the largest rough diamond ever found, the 3,106 ct Cullinan. The Premier mine has produced many notable historic blue diamonds such as the Blue Moon - a 12.03 carats Fancy Vivid Blue Flawless Cushion-shaped diamond.

CUT FROM ROUGH

Discoveries are still sporadic and always astonishing occurrences. since 2008, out of the eighteen million tonnes mined and five million carats recovered, only five world-class blue diamonds have emerged from Cullinan, or less than 0.1 per cent of the mine’s annual yield.

According to the GIA, color diamonds represent approximately 3% of their submissions worldwide, and pink diamonds represent only 5% while blue diamonds estimate less than 4% of the color diamonds submitted.
