GREEN DIAMONDS

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The main causes of green color in gem diamonds, either as the sole mechanism or in combination, are vacancies produced by radiation damage. Most green diamonds are discovered in South American or African mines.

Different causes of color in green diamonds produce slightly different hue ranges, depending on the other impurities and defects present such as structural defects produced by radiation exposure or by more complex defects involving nitrogen, hydrogen, or nickel impurities. Depending on the number of vacancies and the other impurities and defects present, green diamonds colored can have pure green or blue-green hues, yellow-green hues, gray-green hues, and yellow-green hues. RARITY

Fancy color diamonds are among the most highly valued of gemstones due to their beauty and rarity. Interestingly, among the rarest of diamond colors are green, blue, and pink to red. According to the GIA over the last ten years, diamonds with these natural color components comprised less than 0.4% of all diamonds submitted to GIA’s laboratories worldwide (including both fancy-color and those on the D–Z scale). Pure hues of green, blue, or red are even rarer, accounting for less than 0.07% of all diamonds examined.

The chart above highlights the different color hues found in natural green diamonds.
