The West Family
The story of the West Diamond family is one of dedication and innovation that spans more than five decades. Today, Scott West is one of the world’s most distinguished houses for rare and exotic natural color diamonds.
Max West, Scott's grandfather, started his career as a commodities dealer in the heart of the New York diamond district in the early 1950s. He began traveling to distant points in Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia, looking for sources of desirable gemstones and metals for his customers. Max soon transformed his business into an exclusive distributor of small white diamonds, determined to thrive in an ever-evolving market.
When Max passed away, his son Larry West inherited the family business at age 21. Larry decided to consolidate his inventory into larger, higher-value stones. He discovered that he could add value to these diamonds by re-polishing them to improve upon their characteristics. Fixing shapes, diminishing internal imperfections, and enhancing color were just some of the ways he learned to improve a stone.
In the 1980s, Larry traveled to Australia and learned of natural pink diamonds being discovered at the then-unknown Argyle Mine. When working with these color diamonds, he found that improving their color increased their value far more so than it did white diamonds. It was then that Larry decided to dedicate his entire business to color diamonds. He eventually developed his inventory into one of the largest collections of natural color diamonds in the world.
Larry’s son Scott joined the family business in 2007. Like his grandfather and father before him, Scott has adapted the business to thrive in an ever-changing market. Scott found that his family's expertise allowed them to offer the highest quality stones for lower prices than their competitors. He also saw that today's collectors are more knowledgeable than ever before, ultimately leading them to the West collection. It is Scott's vision to continue to consolidate the steps from source to consumer. He believes that increasing transparency will allow collectors to be more confident than they ever were before.
Due to the complexity of the market, however, Scott West still advises collectors to purchase through an advocate such as an auction house or retail store. It is the role of these intermediaries to educate and advocate on behalf of customers and ensure that their desires are met.
